Phoenix provides cooling centers in response to heat

As temperatures rise, Phoenix is opening up buildings to be used as cooling centers and hydration stations. Recreation centers, churches, libraries and other public spaces may offer resources including water, clothing and other items to the public.

Earlier this year, Phoenix opened its first 24/7 cooling center in the Burton Barr Library building to provide those who need it with free water, access to a bathroom, and an air conditioned space.

Here are some important reminders and recommendations when temperatures are high:

  • Stay hydrated and stay out of the sun
  • Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
  • Try to limit strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening.
  • Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.
